Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)
There are also Lake McKenzie
videos here.
Lake McKenzie is a perched lake, which means
that it was formed from a section of sand and organic matter that hardened in
an area between the dunes and water began to collect there. The vegetation around
the lake consists mostly of tall blackbutt forests and wet sclerophyll.

The lake is very popular with visitors because it is so clear and clean and
the sand is white and soft. It is a beautiful place to swim and relax.

There is no camping for 4wd visitors at Lake McKenzie but if you are bushwalking
there is a walkers camp. The only facilities are toilets and water (which needs
to be treated before use).

If you are staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort it is a 4 hour walk each way to
visit the Lake but there are also many tours that include the lake in their
itinerary. For 4wd visitors there are tracks from both sides of the island that
pass Lake McKenzie.

If the main beach at the lake is crowded you can walk clockwise to a quieter
second beach.

The best way to avoid the crowds is to arrive at the lake before 10am or after
3pm.

If possible when swimming Lake McKenzie (and Fraser Islands other lakes) try
use as little or no sunscreen by covering yourself instead. The sunscreen from
so many visitors is a pollutant to the lake.
