Lake Wabby
There are also Lake Wabby videos
here.
Lake Wabby is a both a mirror lake and barrage
lake. Mirror lakes are formed when the ground level becomes low enough to reach
the water table, hence it is a mirror to the massive amount of water that is
under Fraser Island. A barrage lake is one that is being gradually encroached
on by the sand dunes or a sand blow.

The vegetation around the lake consists mostly of blackbutt forests and dry
sclerophyll.

Access to Lake Wabby is by walking from either the lookout and carpark inland
from and above the lake or from the beach side. From the ridge carpark it is
approximately a 1.5 hour return walk and from the beach around 3 hours return.

There are a number of large catfish in the lake and some smaller fish as well
as fresh water turtles.

Lake Wabby is slowly being swallowed by a large sandblow. Over the course of
20 years it has shrunk at least half it size.

There is no camping allowed at Lake Wabby but there is a bushwalkers camp on
the ridge above. At the carpark on the ridge and near the beach access there
are toilets.
