Permits needed on Fraser Island
Permits are needed for driving and camping on Fraser Island.
A vehicle access permit needs to be purchased and displayed
on your vehicle at all times while you are on the island. For this reason you
will need to purchase one before you leave. (The cost is $35.40 until June 2008)
- You can buy a permit online here
- By calling the Department of Environment on 131304
- Visiting a Department of Environment office at Brisbane, Rainbow beach,
Maryborough or Tewantin
- At the Marina Kiosk at the boat harbour in Urangan
- At the River Heads Permit Kiosk, Riverheads barge landing.
- 4wd hire companies often include the permit in their hire fees or can arrange
it for you.
- Some Bill Express agents now sell permits as well. There is a list here.
Permits for camping are needed for anywhere but a private
camping ground. This includes hikers camps. Some campsites also need to be booked,
often quite far in advance.
